Participation
Nowadays, open source software development is more than merely the domain of volunteers; various companies provide support for open source software with the same guarantees as closed source suppliers provide. For example, RedHat and Novell provide support for Linux. In order to be able to provide such support, the supplier must be able to influence the development.
There are a few international open source institutions, such as the Apache Software Foundation, where companies such as IBM, Novell and Sun Microsystems work side by side with developers from Stanford University (among others).
Tjeerd Brenninkmeijer of Hippo says: “The huge international development community of the Apache Software Foundation allows state-of-the-art solutions to be realized, something that is actually impossible for Dutch suppliers of CMS systems.”
Hippo is one of the trendsetters for open source support in the Netherlands. Hippo is already participating for a number of years in open source projects within the Apache Software Foundation, since that is the only way we can live up to the guarantees we give. Hippo defines the broad lines of these projects: we’re sitting behind the driving wheel.
