Hippo makes its money from providing enterprise grade support on the software through support subscriptions that offer guaranteed response times, warranty and legal indemnification to enterprise customers. In addition, Hippo provides services such as implementation support, training and consulting.

Hippo CMS and Hippo Portal are both licensed under the Apache 2.0 license. If you buy a support subscription for Hippo CMS or Hippo Portal you get a Service Level Agreement with guaranteed response times and on top of that warranties and indemnification. In short: the things enterprise users like. You are always free to cancel your subscription, and keep on using the software under the terms of the Apache License again.

As truly open source enterprise software, Hippo does not distinguish its supported 'enterprise' version from the community release: The community versions, distributed by Hippo are full enterprise versions.  The results: more eyeballs, more innovation, a better product.

When you have a support subscription you do have early access to bug fixes and for platinum and gold level we backport bug fixes to previous versions.

For technical questions you can best use the mailing lists or the forum on onehippo.org. Please note that there're separate lists for each of the underlying components in Hippo CMS (CMS, HST, Repository).
